CorTen steel is at the heart of what we do at So-Corten. But how much do you really know about this raw, stylish and resolutely sustainable material? In this article, we offer a comprehensive overview to help you better understand what makes CorTen steel so special... and why it is becoming increasingly popular with lovers of contemporary gardens.
CorTen steel (or weathering steel) is a steel alloy enriched with copper, chromium, nickel and phosphorus, originally designed to resist corrosion without surface treatment. Its name comes from its two main qualities:
COR (corrosion resistance) + TEN (tensile strength).
When exposed to the open air, this steel gradually develops a thin protective layer of rust (called patina), which acts as a natural shield against oxidation. Unlike conventional rust, which corrodes steel, this patina stabilises the surface and significantly extends its lifespan.
Here is why CorTen steel has become a must-have for outdoor design:
The natural rust layer prevents corrosion from penetrating deeper, ensuring decades of longevity, even outdoors.
Its evolving rust colour ranges from orange-brown to dark brown, bringing character and warmth to all types of spaces. It blends perfectly into modern gardens as well as more natural settings.
No need for paint, coating or special care: the material looks after itself. This is one of the great advantages of CorTen steel.
CorTen is stronger than traditional steel, allowing for robust and durable constructions, even with reduced thickness.
At So-Corten, we exclusively use CorTen steel sourced from European suppliers to guarantee impeccable quality and a controlled environmental impact.
CorTen steel is an extremely versatile material, ideal for many outdoor uses:
Its unique aesthetic appeal and robustness make it the perfect choice for structuring, decorating and bringing your outdoor spaces to life with elegance.
